About Protea aspera E.Phillips

Protea aspera, commonly called the rough leaf sugar bush or aardroos suikerbos, is a flowering shrub in the well-known Protea genus. This species is endemic to South Africa, where it occurs in the Kleinrivierberge, Bredasdorpberge, and Garcia's Pass. It is a dense, mat-forming shrub with a root-like growth habit, reaching only 50 cm (20 in) in height. It blooms from September to December, with blooming peaking in September and October. The plant resprouts after wildfires. Seeds are released one to two years after flowers form, and are dispersed by wind. The species is unisexual, and pollination is thought to occur through the activity of mammals. It grows in shale and sandy soils, at altitudes ranging from 0 to 200 m (0 to 656 ft). Protea aspera is classified as a vulnerable species.
