About Prosartes smithii (Hook.) Utech, Shinwari & Kawano
Prosartes smithii (Hook.) Utech, Shinwari & Kawano is a North American species of flowering plant, commonly called largeflower fairybells. It is native to western North America, ranging from Vancouver Island in British Columbia south to Monterey County in California. This species grows in shady forests and woodlands, including redwood forests. It is an erect, branching perennial herb that reaches up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) in height. It has narrow, fuzzy stems that bear wide, oval-shaped, pointed leaves. Leaves grow up to 12 cm (4.7 inches) long and are mostly hairless. Its inflorescence can produce up to seven drooping, hanging flowers, which may be hidden beneath the cover of the large leaves. Each flower is cylindrical to bell-shaped, with six white to green-tinged tepals that grow up to 3 cm (1.2 inches) long each. The fruit this plant produces is an oval-shaped orange or red berry that measures just over 1 cm (0.4 inches) long.
