About Prosartes maculata (Buckley) A.Gray
Prosartes maculata is a North American plant species belonging to the lily family, with the common names yellow mandarin, spotted mandarin, and nodding mandarin. It is a perennial herb that blooms in spring. This species is native to the Great Smoky Mountains, and grows across other areas of the Appalachian region, ranging from northern Georgia and northeastern Alabama to southern West Virginia and southern Ohio. There are historical reports of isolated populations near Detroit, Michigan, but these populations are thought to have been eliminated by urban development. Prosartes maculata can reach a maximum height of 80 cm. Its flowers are bell-shaped, nodding, meaning they hang downward, and are cream-colored with purple spots.
