About Prolemur simus (Gray, 1870)

The greater bamboo lemur, scientifically named Prolemur simus (Gray, 1870), is the largest bamboo lemur, weighing over 5 pounds (2.3 kilograms). It has greyish brown fur and white ear tufts, with a head-body length of around 1.5 feet (46 centimeters). This species has relatively long tails and long back legs, which it uses to leap vertically between trees in its forest habitat. Its current range is restricted to southeastern Madagascar; fossil evidence shows that its former range covered larger areas of the island, extending as far north as Ankarana. Ranomafana National Park and Andringitra National Park are notable locations within its current range.
