About Proiphys amboinensis (L.) Herb.
Caldwell lily, with the scientific name Proiphys amboinensis (L.) Herb., grows on seashores and rocky areas at altitudes up to 500 metres. It favours open, lightly shaded rainforest habitats. This plant grows from a bulb that can reach up to 8 centimetres in diameter, and grows quickly after the wet season arrives in Australia. Its leaves are ovate and nearly circular, measuring 20 to 30 centimetres long and 15 to 35 centimetres wide, and grow on stalks that are 15 to 60 centimetres long. The leaves die back during the dry season. For cultivation and use, it makes a good container plant that requires abundant water during the growing season. It can be propagated from seed, or by dividing and lifting the bulb.
