Prodotiscus regulus was first formally described by Sundevall in 1850. This bird species is commonly called the brown-backed honeybird, and it also goes by the alternate common names of Wahlberg's honeybird, Wahlberg's honeyguide, and sharp-billed honeyguide. It belongs to the Indicatoridae bird family. It is named in honor of Johan August Wahlberg, a Swedish naturalist. It can be found across a broad area of Africa, with recorded occurrences in Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
