About Pristigenys alta (Gill, 1862)

Pristigenys alta, whose most distinctive feature is its very large eyes, is a fish species with a blunt, ovate, bright red, flattened disk-shaped body. Individuals commonly reach around 20 centimeters in length, with a maximum recorded length of 30 centimeters. This species has rough scales and large ventral fins. Pristigenys alta is distributed in the Western Atlantic Ocean along the east coast of North America, ranging from North Carolina southward, as well as in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the West Indies. It is a solitary marine fish that primarily inhabits reef areas at depths between 5 and 200 meters, and it can also be found on rocky bottoms.
