About Prionoxystus macmurtrei Guérin-Méneville, 1829

Prionoxystus macmurtrei, commonly called the little carpenterworm moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Cossidae. Its scientific authority is Guérin-Méneville, 1829. This moth can be found in Ontario, Quebec, Florida, extending west to Texas, and north to Minnesota. The wingspan of adult little carpenterworm moths ranges from 45 to 75 mm. Adult moths are active from April to July each year. Larvae of this species feed on the wood of ash, maple, and oak trees. Prionoxystus macmurtrei is classified as a pest, because the feeding tunnels created by its larvae reduce the commercial value of hardwood lumber.
