About Priocnemis conformis Smith, 1876
Priocnemis conformis Smith, 1876 shows consistent morphological variation across New Zealand populations linked to latitude. All female and male individuals from North Island populations have entirely red bodies. South Island populations display increasing melanism at higher latitudes: in the northern South Island, the head and thorax are black, while the metasoma remains red; for populations located south of 44°S, the entire body is black. The wings of this species are typically subhyaline with a reddish tint and black tips. Populations on Stewart Island may additionally have completely blackened wings and appendages. Pedipalps and antennae also become shorter and thicker as latitude increases.
