About Priacma serrata (LeConte, 1861)
Priacma serrata is a species of reticulated beetle that belongs to the family Cupedidae. It is native to western North America, and it is the only living (extant) species in the genus Priacma. Individuals of this species inhabit coniferous forests, and they are typically found under loose tree bark. This species displays sexual dimorphism: females, which are rarely collected, are much larger than males. Males range in size from 9.6 to 12.5 mm. Males of Priacma serrata are recorded to be strongly attracted to the odor of bleach. When adult males are dissected, their intestines are consistently found to be empty. In places, their digestive tract is so shrunken that no food could pass through it at all. Collection data suggests that adult emergence of this species is highly irregular, with large numbers of adults emerging during sporadic, infrequent events.
