About Presbytis rubicunda (Müller, 1838)

Presbytis rubicunda, commonly known as the maroon langur, maroon leaf monkey, or red leaf monkey, is a species in the family Cercopithecidae. It is endemic to Borneo, a Southeast Asian island, and the smaller nearby island of Karimata. This species mostly inhabits forests at altitudes below 2,000 m, and its primary habitat is dense dipterocarp evergreen forest. Borneo, which hosts healthy tropical rainforest, also includes shallow, swampy areas with acidic, decomposed plant matter; these areas experience seasonal dry periods, and rivers in these regions rise around two meters during the wet season. Presbytis rubicunda feeds on leaves, seeds, and fruits. It is an arboreal primate that spends most of its time in the forest canopy. Compared to other primates, maroon leaf monkeys have large home ranges and low population densities. This pattern is thought to result from their reliance on specific rare, widely dispersed trees.
