About Preactis millardae England, 1984

This species, commonly called the walking anemone, is an unusual-looking sea anemone. Mature individuals can grow up to 6 cm in diameter and 30 cm in length. Their entire body column is covered in papillae. The body has a pale background color, and scarlet lines radiate outward from the mouth, visible on the body between the papillae. Juveniles are pale or white, and have protruding rounded body swellings instead of papillae. This anemone has only been found on both sides of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa, and is endemic to this area. It occurs at depths between 10 and 30 meters underwater. The walking anemone moves by 'walking' in a creeping motion similar to a leech. It is most commonly found on vertical rock walls, though it may occasionally occur on sand patches. It is a voracious predator of the multicoloured sea fan Acabaria rubra, and is often found eating these sea fans, consuming them all the way down to their skeletal support.
