Potamogeton octandrus Poir. is an aquatic herbaceous plant. It is a common species that grows in lakes and ponds. It occurs naturally across Africa, Asia, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. Within Asia, it has been recorded from the Russian Far East, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam (the type locality of this species), Indonesia (the type locality of P. javanicus), and Papua New Guinea. Australia is the type locality of P. tenuicaulis.
