About Portunus trituberculatus (Miers, 1876)

The carapace of Portunus trituberculatus can grow up to 15 centimetres (5.9 inches) wide, and 7 centimetres (2.8 inches) in length from front to back. This species can be distinguished from its close relative P. armatus, which is also widely fished, by a consistent difference in the count of broad teeth: P. trituberculatus has three broad teeth on the front of its carapace, while P. armatus has four; on the inner margin of the merus, P. trituberculatus has four broad teeth, while P. armatus has three. Portunus trituberculatus occurs in the coastal waters off Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan.
