About Populus heterophylla L.

Populus heterophylla L., commonly called swamp poplar, reaches a mature height of 50 to 100 ft (15 to 30 m). Its trunk and branches range from light to medium grey, and the mature trunk has coarse furrowing. This deciduous tree has alternate leaves that measure 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) long and 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10.2 cm) wide. The upper surface of mature leaves is medium to dark green, while the lower surface is pale green. Leaf petioles are 2 to 3 inches (5.1 to 7.6 cm) long, and typically range from pale green to pale yellow in color. This species is wind-pollinated. It flowers in April, and produces fruits from May to June. It has no special uses or commercial value, because it resembles Populus deltoides, a related species that grows faster and more easily.
