About Pontania pedunculi (Hartig, 1837)
This section describes the gall formed by Pontania pedunculi. The gall develops on the underside of host plant leaves. It is globular or ovoid in shape, reaching up to 5 mm in size. Its color can be green or yellow, sometimes with a red flush, and it may have warts with a variable density of hairs. A yellowish scar appears on the upper side of the leaf; this scar may be flush with the leaf surface or very slightly raised. Known host willows for this gall include eared willow (Salix aurita), goat willow (Salix caprea), the hybrid of goat and tea-leaved willow (Salix caprea × phylicifolia), grey willow (Salix cinerea), Salix silesiaca, and Salix starkeana. Regarding distribution, Pontania pedunculi occurs across most of Europe, ranging north to Inari, Finland and east to Sakhalin, Russia. The gall is common in Great Britain and Ireland.
