About Polypremum procumbens L.
Polypremum is a flowering plant genus in the plant family Tetrachondraceae. This genus contains only one species, Polypremum procumbens L., which is commonly known as juniperleaf or rustweed. Over time, Polypremum has also been classified under several other families including Buddlejaceae, Loganiaceae, Rubiaceae, and most recently its own separate family Polypremaceae. Polypremum procumbens can be a perennial or annual forb or herb. It grows low to the ground, and sometimes produces multiple ascending stems that bear small white flowers. These flowers bloom during summer and fall. Its leaves are arranged oppositely, measure 1 to 2.5 cm in length, are narrow, and have pointed tips. In autumn, the foliage of this species turns brownish red. Polypremum procumbens is native to the eastern United States excluding New England, with its native range extending south to Central America and the West Indies, and there are also native occurrences of the species in South America. It has been introduced to the Pacific basin and Australia, and it often grows along roads and airstrips. Within its range in the southeastern United States, it is common in coastal plain and piedmont regions, where it grows in disturbed areas, and it is rare in mountain areas.
