About Polycauliona polycarpa (Hoffm.) Frödén, Arup & Søchting
Polycauliona polycarpa is a corticolous, or bark-dwelling, foliose lichen that belongs to the family Teloschistaceae. It was first formally described by German botanist Georg Franz Hoffmann in 1796 under the name Lobaria polycarpa. It has accumulated a large amount of synonymy over the course of its taxonomic history. In 2013, Patrik Frödén and colleagues moved the species to the genus Polycauliona, as part of a restructuring of the family Teloschistaceae based on molecular phylogenetics. In northern North America, a common vernacular name for this species is pin-cushion sunburst lichen.
