About Polycaon stoutii (LeConte, 1853)

Scientific name: Polycaon stoutii (LeConte, 1853)

Adults of this species measure between 10 and 23 mm in length. Their bodies are cylindrical, covered in hair, and solid black. The head is positioned slightly downturned.

Polycaon stoutii can be told apart from its close relative P. granulatus by two key physical traits: its antennae have 11 segments, and both its second and third tarsal segments are cylindrical. It can also be distinguished from P. punctatus by its entirely black colouration, and the fact that its third antennal segment is much shorter than its fourth antennal segment.
