About Pollachius pollachius (Linnaeus, 1758)
Pollachius pollachius is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Gadidae. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) uses the English name pollack for this species, while in American English it is called European pollock. Other common vernacular names for the species are lythe, and callig in the Isle of Man. This species is common in the north-eastern area of the Northern Atlantic, including the Bay of Biscay and the North Sea. Adult Pollachius pollachius can reach a maximum length of 130 cm (51 in) and a maximum weight of 12.5 kg (28 lb); a more common maximum length for adults is 75 cm (30 in).
Pollack grow quickly and are relatively short-lived, with a maximum reported age of 15 years. They spawn offshore, but their spawning grounds are not well studied; a study of a fjord population in Norway found evidence that local spawning may occur. Pollack are benthopelagic, meaning they live near the sea floor, and they appear to be relatively sedentary.
