About Pohlia nutans (Hedw.) Lindb.
Pohlia nutans, commonly known as the nodding thread-moss, is a species of moss belonging to the family Mniaceae. It has a cosmopolitan distribution, occurring on all seven continents. Specifically, it can be found in Europe, Iceland, Siberia, Japan, North America, Greenland, the Andes of South America, South Africa, Tasmania, nearby mainland Australia, New Zealand, and the Antarctic Peninsula and Mount Rittmann in Antarctica. It is an extremophile, with resistance to cold, drought, salt, acid, heavy metals, and intense ultraviolet radiation. Fungal infections in Pohlia nutans cause the formation of fairy rings. Several causative agents of these infections have been identified, including species of the genus Cladosporium, as well as Mortierella gamsii and Mortierella fimbricystis.
