About Poecilus chalcites (Say, 1823)

Poecilus chalcites (Say, 1823) is a species of woodland ground beetle belonging to the family Carabidae. It can be found in the Caribbean, Central America, and North America, and is common in cropland in Illinois and other U.S. states. This is a carnivorous species that eats various crop pests, including Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, Helicoverpa zea, Agrotis ipsilon, and Mythimna unipuncta. Males and females of Poecilus chalcites can be distinguished by the shape of the most proximal foretarsus: in males, this structure is heart-shaped, while in females it is thinner.
