About Podolobium alpestre (F.Muell.) Crisp & P.H.Weston

Podolobium alpestre is an ascending or low spreading shrub that grows up to 1.3 metres (0.051 inches) high, with young stems covered in short, soft hairs. Its leaves are arranged in whorls of three or arranged oppositely, and are egg-shaped to broadly oblong, measuring 1โ€“5 cm (0.39โ€“1.97 in) long and 3โ€“14 mm (0.12โ€“0.55 in) wide. The pea-shaped flowers are yellow-orange, borne in terminal or axillary racemes on a silky pedicel 1โ€“3 mm (0.039โ€“0.118 in) long, and occasionally have red markings. Its bracts are lance-shaped or narrow, taper to a point, and are 1โ€“2 mm (0.039โ€“0.079 in) long. Flowering takes place from November to February. The fruit is an oval-shaped pod 8โ€“15 mm (0.31โ€“0.59 in) long, marked with numerous warty creases, tapering to a point, and covered in long, soft straight hairs. This species, commonly known as alpine shaggy-pea, grows in alpine heaths and high-altitude woodland in Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.
