About Podocarpus spinulosus (Sm.) R.Br. ex Mirb.
Podocarpus spinulosus, commonly known as dwarf plum pine or spiny-leaf podocarp, is a species of podocarp. It is native to the warm-temperate coastal regions of New South Wales and southern Queensland. It typically grows as an understorey shrub, and rarely reaches more than 2 metres in height. James Edward Smith first formally described this species in 1817 under the name Taxus spinulosa. It was reclassified to its current name Podocarpus spinulosus in 1825. Its leaves are needle-like, measuring 2โ8 cm (0.79โ3.15 in) long, with sharply pointed tips. Leaves are green on the upper surface and bear glaucous stomatal bands on the underside. The species produces berry-like cones: these have a fleshy, edible purple-black aril that is 1โ2 cm (0.39โ0.79 in) long, and hold one (rarely two) apical seeds, each around 1 cm (0.5 in) long.
