About Podabrus alpinus (Paykull, 1798)

Adults of Podabrus alpinus have a body length of 11 to 15 mm (0.43 to 0.59 inches). Their overall appearance varies greatly. Elytra can range in color from shiny black to dark brownish-gold. Legs are most often black or dark brown-orange, with black tarsi. Typically, the pronotum has a black stripe that runs lengthwise, with orange or pale yellow sides. Some P. alpinus specimens have been found to have no black markings at all on the pronotum. While pronotum appearance is variable, the head is consistently black from the area between the compound eyes to the front of the pronotum. The antennae are mostly black, with a few orange segments located closer to the head. Podabrus alpinus is found throughout Europe, excluding the Iberian Peninsula and most of the Balkans, and it is most common in the Alps.
