About Poa douglasii Nees
Poa douglasii is a species of grass commonly known as Douglas' bluegrass and sand dune bluegrass. It is endemic to the coastline of California, where it grows in shifting sand dunes. Most of its populations occur along the Central Coast and Channel Islands, and it is occasionally found on the North Coast north of Mendocino. This is a perennial grass that grows in small, dense clumps, reaching a maximum height of about 30 centimeters. It grows from a network of long rhizomes and stolons that anchor the plant to its loose sandy substrate; this network can grow up to one meter long. Its inflorescence is a dense, oval-shaped arrangement of overlapping spikelets. The species is dioecious, meaning male and individual plants produce different types of flowers in their inflorescences. Like many plants endemic to sand dune habitats, Poa douglasii is threatened by invasive species.
