About Pluvianellus socialis G.R.Gray, 1846

In structure and habits, this species closely resembles a turnstone, but cannot be confused with any other wader species. Its upperparts and breast are pale grey, while the rest of its underparts are white. It has short red legs, a black bill, and red eyes. Young birds have yellowish eyes and legs, and overall grey plumage with scaling. Its call is a dovelike coo. This species is not a long-distance migrant, though some individuals move further north within southern Argentina in winter. It breeds inland, then moves to the coast for winter, especially to estuaries. One of its preferred wintering areas is Puerto Madryn and Península Valdes, Chubut, Argentina (Jehl 1975).
