Pluteus podospileus has a brown cap with a tomentose or velvety texture. Its cap shape ranges from convex to umbonate. The gills of this mushroom are free; they begin white and turn pinkish as the mushroom matures. The stipe is mostly white, with a bulbous base, and measures 2.5–3.5 centimeters long and 0.3–0.4 centimeters wide. The spore print of Pluteus podospileus is brownish or dingy pink. This species typically grows in disturbed areas, where it develops on wood.
