About Pleurotus purpureo-olivaceus (G.Stev.) Segedin, P.K.Buchanan & J.P.Wilkie
Pleurotus purpureo-olivaceus is a gilled fungus species native to Australia and New Zealand. It grows on dead wood from Nothofagus trees. While it looks very similar in physical form to other species in the Pleurotus genus, research confirms it is a distinct species that cannot cross-breed with other Pleurotus, and it is phylogenetically separate from other members of the genus. The caps of its fruit bodies reach a maximum width of 7 cm (2.8 inches), and their color ranges from dark violet through brown and olive to yellow-green, with variation depending on how much light the fungus is exposed to. Its stipes are positioned laterally and range in color from white to yellow.
