About Pleuronichthys coenosus Girard, 1854

Pleuronichthys coenosus, commonly known as the C-O sole, is a right-eyed flatfish species. It has large, bulbous eyes that sit close to the tip of its snout. Its upper body surface is mottled, ranging from light to dark brown, and may occasionally have white spots. Most individuals have a prominent dark spot on the middle of their body, with a pale patch positioned directly behind this spot. The underside of the fish is light in color. The caudal fin bears a dark crescent-shaped marking and a separate large dark spot; when viewed together, these two markings resemble the capital letters C and O.
