About Plethodon dixi Pope & Fowler, 1949
The Dixie Caverns salamander, scientifically known as Plethodon dixi, is a species of salamander that belongs to the family Plethodontidae. This species is endemic to the state of Virginia in the United States. It is most commonly found in Roanoke County, though multiple specimens have also been recorded from the surrounding counties. For a long time, the Dixie Caverns salamander was regularly confused with Wehrle's salamander, Plethodon wehrlei. It was merged into Wehrle's salamander species not long after it was first described, but a 2019 study confirmed Plethodon dixi as a separate, distinct species.
