About Plerandra elegantissima (H.J.Veitch ex Mast.) Lowry, G.M.Plunkett & Frodin
Plerandra elegantissima is an evergreen shrub or tree. In its mature outdoor growth, it reaches 8–15 m (26–49 ft) tall and 2 m (7 ft) broad. Its leaves are thin, range in color from coppery red to dark green, have toothed edges, and are composed of 7 to 11 leaflets. Leaves on adult plants are much broader than those on younger specimens. In autumn, the plant produces clusters of pale green flowers, which are followed by black fruit. For cultivation, this species requires a minimum temperature of 13–15 °C (55–59 °F). In temperate climate zones, it is grown as a houseplant, and remains much more compact, typically reaching heights of only 2–3 m (7–10 ft). When grown in cultivation, it needs ample light and humidity, and its soil should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings. The plant has very little branching, and is sensitive to infestation by mealybugs. Cultivated under the older name Schefflera elegantissima, this plant has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
