About Plectroniella armata (K.Schum.) Robyns

Plectroniella armata (K.Schum.) Robyns, originally described as Vangueria armata by Karl Moritz Schumann in 1899, is a species of flowering plant in the family Rubiaceae. It grows as a shrub or tree, native to southern Mozambique, Eswatini, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Northern Provinces of northeastern South Africa. This species is distinguished by the presence of large spines. In 1928, Walter Robyns moved this species into the new monotypic genus Plectroniella. A 2004 molecular phylogenetic study found that Plectroniella armata was related to Canthium ciliatum, so the species was transferred to the genus Canthium, where it is known as Canthium armatum.
