About Plectomerus dombeyanus (Valenciennes, 1827)

Plectomerus dombeyanus is a mussel species that does not display sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females have no visible external differences. Its shell has a somewhat rhomboidal shape and can reach up to 150 millimetres (5.9 in) in length. The shell colour ranges from greenish brown to brown, and darkens to black as the individual ages. The nacre (inner shell layer) of this mussel is usually deep purple. This species is native to the Southeastern United States. Its distribution extends from Texas in the west to Florida in the east, and reaches as far north as Illinois.
