As of 2006, it has been recognized as a separate species, split from the Plecotus auritus species complex. This bat has been recorded in six countries: China, Kazakhstan, South Korea, North Korea, Mongolia, and Russia. Its documented habitats include taiga, Southern Siberian mountain forests, temperate mixed forests, and temperate deciduous forests.
