About Platysmurus leucopterus (Temminck, 1824)
The Malayan black magpie, with the scientific name Platysmurus leucopterus, is a bird species belonging to the corvid family Corvidae. Contrary to what its common name suggests, this species is not actually a magpie. It was also long thought to be a jay, but this classification was incorrect; it is actually a treepie. Treepies are a distinct group of corvids that look externally similar to magpies. This species is distributed across Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand. The Bornean black magpie, previously named P. atterimus, was formerly classified as a subspecies of the Malayan black magpie. The natural habitats of the Malayan black magpie are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, and subtropical or tropical mangrove forest. This species is currently threatened by habitat loss.
