About Platysaurus intermedius Matschie, 1891
All subspecies of Platysaurus intermedius (common flat lizard) have females and juveniles with black scales and white stripes along their backs. Their bellies are brown, with white outer edges. Each subspecies has distinct coloration in adult males. Common flat lizards are the most widespread and abundant species in the genus Platysaurus. They live under exfoliating (weathering) rocks, and prefer granite, sandstone, and quartzite as their rock types. Their habitats include moderately moist savannahs and rock outcrops. Their distribution covers all of Zimbabwe, North Province, Mpumalanga, southern Malawi, eastern Botswana, Swaziland, Mozambique, and northern KwaZulu-Natal. This range includes the Kalahari Desert and several large river drainage systems.
