About Platycypha fitzsimonsi (Pinhey, 1950)

Platycypha fitzsimonsi, commonly known as the boulder jewel or Fitzsimon's jewel, is a species of damselfly belonging to the family Chlorocyphidae. This species is endemic to South Africa, and its natural habitats are wooded and forested streams and rivers. It is a fairly small damselfly, measuring 29–34 mm in total length with a wingspan of 46–54 mm. Mature males have an orange-red and black striped thorax, and a distinctive abdomen patterned with red, black, and blue. Females and immature males are colored dark brown and khaki. As with several other members of Chlorocyphidae, males perform a courtship display called foot waggling towards ovipositing females: they extend and vibrate their tibia to display their white coloration.
