Adult Platycorypha nigrivirga can be identified by their yellowish or green body color, a dark transverse stripe on the head, and dark markings on the thorax. The wing cell of this species is not strongly arched, it is flat, and it is more than 1.7 times wider than it is high. Known specimens of Platycorypha nigrivirga have been collected from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Spain, Uruguay, and the United States of America. The species was first recorded in Southern California in October 2008, and this first Southern California record was published in 2009. Platycorypha nigrivirga is also recorded to occur in Europe and Africa.
