About Platycnemis pennipes (Pallas, 1771)

Platycnemis pennipes reaches an approximate total length of 32 millimetres, or 1.3 inches. Mature adults of this species can be distinguished from most other blue damselflies by several key morphological traits: expanded white edges on the tibiae, paired black markings running down most of the abdomen, broad pale brown double antehumeral stripes, a wider head, and pale brown pterostigmata. Males have a blue, often pale abdomen and typically have a greenish thorax. Females are a very pale yellow-green with black markings.
