About Platycheirus trichopus (Thomson, 1869)

Platycheirus trichopus, commonly called the western forest sedgesitter, is a species of syrphid fly that belongs to the Bacchini tribe of the Syrphidae family. This species of flower fly is typically found west of the Rocky Mountains in North America. For most species in the Platycheirus genus, identification beyond the genus level requires microscopic examination. According to Even Dankowicz, P. trichopus is an exception to this rule: when high quality images of its head and face are available, it can be identified by a unique set of characteristics.
