About Platyceps najadum (Eichwald, 1831)

Platyceps najadum has a slim body, and rarely reaches a total length (including the tail) of over one metre (39 inches). This species is distributed across the Balkans, the Aegean region, Cyprus, the Middle East, and extends as far east as Turkmenistan and the Caucasus Mountains. It inhabits dry and xeric environments across a wide range of habitat types, including desert, rocky terrain, forests, woodland scrub, and agricultural land, found at altitudes from sea level up to 2,000 m (6,600 ft). It is commonly found in fields, and is often observed crushed on roads. Platyceps najadum is an oviparous (egg-laying) species; females produce clutches of between 3 and 16 eggs.
