Plants of Platanthera purpurascens grow 24 to 80 cm tall. This species flowers from July to August. Its flowers are green to yellowish-green, and the flower lip is often reddish, a trait that gives the species its common name. The lip measures 4 to 8 mm long, and each flower has a short nectar spur 2 to 3 mm long. Platanthera purpurascens is endemic to the United States, where it is found in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. It grows at elevations between 2500 and 3300 m, and requires wet habitat types including seeps, stream banks, and meadows.
