About Plantago ovata Forssk.

Plantago ovata Forssk. has many common names, including blond plantain, desert Indianwheat, blond psyllium, and isabghol. This species is native to the Mediterranean region, and has become naturalized in central, eastern, and south Asia, as well as North America. It is a common source of psyllium, a type of dietary fiber. The seed husks of psyllium are indigestible, and they provide soluble fiber that can be fermented into butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid, by butyrate-producing bacteria. Plantago ovata is the most widely used source for commercial psyllium-containing products.
