About Placiphorella velata (Dall, 1879)

Placiphorella velata, commonly called the veiled chiton, has eight overlapping valves (plates), all of which are fully visible on its dorsal surface. The plates can be brown, pink, or green, and they are typically streaked or mottled with other contrasting accent colors. A cream-colored girdle surrounds these plates, and this girdle is sparsely covered in long setae. The species' most distinctive feature is an extended forward portion of the girdle called the veil, which is usually lighter in color than the rest of the girdle. This characteristic veil is what gives the species its common name.
