About Pituophis catenifer (Blainville, 1835)
This entry corresponds to Pituophis catenifer, described by Blainville in 1835. When fully mature, adult gopher snakes are typically 36 to 84 inches (91 to 213 cm) long. On their dorsal (upper) side, gopher snakes have a yellowish or light sandy brown base color, marked with a series of large dark brown or black blotches, and smaller darker spots along the sides. On their ventral (lower) side, they are a lighter yellowish shade, which is either uniform across the area or marked with brown spots. Multiple different color morphs exist for this species, varying between subspecies.
