This species is scientifically named Pithecopus gonzagai, published by Felipe Silva de Andrade, Isabelle Aquemi Haga, Johnny Sousa Ferreira, Shirlei Maria Recco-Pimentel, Luís Felipe Toledo and Daniel Pacheco Bruschi in 2020. The original description was published in the paper titled "A new cryptic species of Pithecopus (Anura, Phyllomedusidae) in north-eastern Brazil", which appeared in European Journal of Taxonomy, volume 723, pages 108–134, with the Bibcode 2020EJTax.723..108D and doi 10.5852/ejt.2020.723.1147.
