About Pithecia napensis Lönnberg, 1938

The Napo saki (Pithecia napensis), also called the Napo monk saki, is a species of saki monkey, which is a type of New World monkey. Its native range covers parts of eastern Ecuador and northern Peru. The species gets its name from the Napo River, which is located within its geographic range. Originally, Lönnberg described this taxon in 1938 as the subspecies Pithecia monachus napensis. It was later treated as a synonym of Pithecia monachus monachus. In 1987, Hershkovitz kept this taxon classified under Pithecia monachus. It was finally elevated to full species status in 2014.
