About Pisolithus tinctorius (Mont.) E.Fisch.

Pisolithus tinctorius (Mont.) E.Fisch. has a fruiting body that measures 5–30 centimetres (2–12 in) in height and 4–20 cm (1+1⁄2–8 in) in width, with a thin yellow-brown to brown exterior layer. Its spores are brown, and it is similar to Dictyocephalos attenuatus. As for uses, the black viscous gel from this puffball is used as a natural dye for clothes. Pisolithus arhizus, a related entity mentioned, is a major component of mycorrhizal fungus mixtures sold for gardening, where it acts as a powerful root stimulator. This species is inedible.
