About Piriqueta cistoides (L.) Mey. ex Steud.
Piriqueta cistoides grows between 15 and 50 cm (0.5 to 1.6 ft) tall, and forms colonies from sprouts that emerge from its roots. Its leaves are alternately arranged with toothed margins, and are oblong to lanceolate in shape. Leaves measure 2.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) long and 0.5 to 1.7 cm (0.2 to 0.7 in) wide. When flowering, the blooms have 5 petals that are 1.5 to 2 cm (0.6 to 0.8 in) long, and range in color from bright orange to yellow. Flowering occurs from late spring through autumn, between April and October. The seeds of Piriqueta cistoides are obovate in shape, 1.8 to 2 mm (0.07 to 0.08 in) long, and are tan or grey in color.
Within the United States, the distribution of Piriqueta cistoides covers South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. This species is classified as a facultative species. It is commonly found in pine flatwoods and sandhill habitats, and prefers dry, well-drained environments with high levels of sunlight.
